Top Tip
Transport for London (TFL) has one of the world’s largest 24-hour public transport systems, including buses, trains, trams and ferries, making it easy to get around London. However, most of London’s transport network does not accept cash, so it’s best to purchase an Oyster Card from a London Underground ticket machine, or use your contactless card to tap in and out.
Taxis are also available, but they can be expensive, so Uber and Bolt are preferred by locals. Because everything is within walking distance and conveniently located near your London apartment, walking or cycling are also great options.
Top Tip
Tipping isn’t widely expected in the UK. Waitstaff, baristas and cab drivers do not usually anticipate a gratuity, though it will be gratefully accepted. The one exception is London restaurants, which typically add an optional service charge to your bill.
Away from traditional markets, haggling is uncommon. If you try to negotiate a lower price in a London restaurant or shop, it’s likely you’ll be met with bemusement or possibly be considered rude. Tax is included in shop prices, so the price you see is the price you’ll pay.
The UK’s weather is famously unpredictable—it’s why locals love talking about it so much. But one thing’s for sure: any stay in London will be met with some rain. Winter temperatures typically sit around 5° C (41° F), while summer temperatures can reach the low 30s Celcius (86° F).
You’ll probably want a jumper (sweater) while visiting London, whatever the season, as even in the summer it can be cool in the evenings. Just remember, whatever the weather, the standard commentary is “it’ll brighten up soon”.
An electric plug in the UK has three pins. Search for a Type G plug adaptor, which are widely available to purchase in the UK. Mobile data reception is excellent in London, and SIM cards are available in all phone shops such as O2, Vodafone or Three, if you don’t want to pay roaming charges. Free Wi-Fi will also be included in your long-term stay in London.
Safety & Security
With any large city, it’s important you follow some general rules. Be aware of your surroundings at all times, especially in crowded places. Check your pockets frequently. Don’t travel to secluded areas, and stay local. Don’t roam around the city alone at night.
Central London is known for having small “express” style supermarkets just about everywhere across the city, which means one thing—you definitely won’t be short on food options during your long-term rental in London.
High quality, high price: Keep an eye out for M&S, Waitrose or other upscale grocers such as Whole Foods Market if you like the finer things in life. These popular supermarkets are known for their price, quality and excellent customer service.
Mid-range: You’ll rarely be more than five minutes from a Sainsbury’s, Tesco or Co-op supermarket, selling all of your day-to-day groceries at a reasonable price and good quality.
Cheaper eats: Asda, Aldi and Lidl are known as London’s cheaper supermarkets, but the price/quality ratio is pretty impressive. These supermarkets aren’t typically in every area in London, so you may need to travel slightly outside of central London to get to one.
